THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VITRIFIED TILES AND CERAMIC TILES

Ceramic and Vitrified Tiles

Vitrified tiles are manufactured from mixtures containing clay and some elements like silica, quart and feldspar why ceramic tiles are made from only clay. Thus, the main difference between vitrified tiles and ceramic tiles are their compositions.

Vitrified and ceramic tiles are mostly compared as they both are widely used.  This write-up points out the differences between these two types of tiles. Vitrified tiles are much less porous and are suitable for a wider range of projects.

The name Vitrified Tiles was coined from vitrify which indicates the process of making a glass or something related to a glass.  These tiles are known for their water absorbing capacity and resistance to stain.

Ceramic tiles, on the other hand, are plain clay tiles. The process of manufacturing ceramic tiles simply involves molding the clay into the shapes of tiles and then cooking them inside a kiln. The heat forms the hard structure of clays. The tiles are then coated with a glaze so that they become water resistant.

As a result of their composition difference, various factors of distinction tend to surface. Vitrified tiles consist of a mixture of clay with elements like silica, and feldspar. Therefore, when the mixture is baked in high temperatures, the elements of the mixture fuse together and make a glass type product making the tiles to be strong, durable and resistant to water.

Ceramic tiles are produced from the earthen clay. Thus, they do not form a glass type substance. These tiles must be glazed in order to obtain an external protection layer. The most vital advantage of ceramic tiles is that they have a natural and earthy look in comparison to the artificial look of vitrified tiles.
